UPHA’s Day at the Legislature

On February 17, 2011, UPHA held its 2nd annual Day at the Legislature, one of many steps the Association has taken to become a more relevant player in the legislative process.

UPHA sponsored a mid-morning refreshment break in the House and Senate, where association representatives educated Representatives and Senators about the benefits of prohibiting the sale of flavored tobacco products, implementing an electronics waste recycling program and restoring funding to many core public health programs (women’s cancer screening, immunizations, Baby-Your-Baby and heart disease and stroke prevention)

As a result, funding was restored to core public health programs! However, bills that would have restricted flavored tobacco products and created electronics recycling programs will have to wait until next year. Due to the hard work of your colleagues, the future of this legislation looks promising. Check out the action firsthand!

National Public Health Week

April 4-10, 2011, is National Public Health Week. This year highlights safety and living injury-free at home, at work and in our communities. Did you know injury is the leading cause of death for all Utah children and adults ages 1-44? Injuries aren’t accidents and we can prevent them from happening:
  • Wear a seatbelt
  • Avoid distracted driving
  • Properly install and use child safety seats
  • Wear a helmet when biking and skateboarding
  • Store cleaning supplies in locked cabinets
